The Sun

A good way to visit the model of the solar system is to begin at the center, the sun.

The model of the Sun, a 140cm [55.19 in] diameter ball made of steel tubes has been placed on top of a 20m [65.61 ft] tall column at the Patterimäki of Pajamäki. The place is about 200m [656.168 ft] north of the terminus of the buses 14 and 50 on Pajamäentie. You can also reach the hill from another direction from Takkatie from the terminus of the bus 79V. Those who come with their own car should find a parking place on Takkatie.

It is worth noting, that the concrete base is shaped like a hemisphere and is the exact size of the model of the sun. There are also a number of WWI trenches and fortifications on Pajamäki which you will want to be aware of when walking or biking around the area since they are both a historical curiosity as well as hazardous if you fall into one of the narrow, overgrown holes in the ground. A page with a brief background of the trenches and a map of the fortifications in Helsinki and more detailed history with pictures.

The Sun
The model of the sun is atop a tall pole, so it might be seen from the other planet models. The model made of steel tubes. The base is 1.4m in diameter as is the model. Since the model is so high, it is difficult to imagine its real size.

The Sun

The sun is a star which Earth, 8 other planets and celestial bodies of the solar system revolve around. Its diameter is 1.4 million km [869,920 mi] or 109 times the diameter of Earth (1.4m [55.19 in] in the model). The mass of the Sun is 99.9% of the total mass of the solar system. You can see the location of the planets in this model from the map.
